For any group of people working together, teamwork and comradery is important. One of the best ways to establish those is with ice breakers. While they can run the gamut from silly to more personal, the goal is to increase the sense of cohesion.

Here is a list of our favorites, try them in your next board meeting!

  • Two Truths, One Lie – This is a fun and easy way to get people talking, especially a group of people who know of each other, but don’t actually know each other. Ask everyone to share two true things and one lie about themselves, and then the group has to guess which one is the lie.
  • Pass the Ball – This is another great icebreaker for any group, especially one who is just starting to work together. All you need to do is pass a ball around and as each person receives the ball they share a fun fact about themselves. Easy!
  • Telephone – Everyone knows this game. While not traditionally an ice breaker, we’ve found that this game is excellent for groups who are used to working together, but who need something truly silly and fun to break them out of routine. All it takes is for one person to pick a phrase, whisper it to the person the next to them, and then each person whispers the phrase to the next person. The last person’s job is to say it out loud for the group, and see how much changed between the first and last whisper. We’re fond of this one because it demonstrates the importance of clear communication!
